Jubilee Mugs From ASDA

I don't really remember the Queen's Silver Jubilee back in 1977 as I was only two, well almost three to be exact. However, I do recall the photographs that my parents had of the street party which was held in the street in which we lived, in a photo album. There I am sat at the end of a very long table surrounded by adult and children dressed in 1970's style red, white and blue clothing.

Anyway, last week I received a surprise parcel in the post, which, when the boys and I opened it, we found to be containing these Jubilee mugs.

They were a gift from ASDA and very nice they are too as they are something I can put away for the boys to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with, as at the ages they are now, they don't know what all the excitement is about this coming weekend. I know that my Mum has some commemorative mugs from 1977 for my brother and I, so I think these two items are something for my two to have when they are older.

Sporting one of the official Diamond Jubilee designs, which I think is very fresh and contemporary, these mugs are are available to buy from ASDA right now. They are very reasonably priced too:

The portable coffee or tea mug is just £5 and is lovely and heavy and makes a nice change from the aluminium travel mugs that are usually available to buy. I think tea would taste much nicer from this!

The Jubilee mug retails at just £3 and is ideal for any Earl or Lady Grey tea bag, as well as your more everyday tea bags of course!

These are just a couple of the many Jubilee products available in ASDA stores.

I was sent these items as a gift, and I was asked to give them a little mention on my blog if I liked them. I do and therefore I have, and all comments expressed are my own.

Why Can't Children Just Be Children?

There are times that I am very grateful that I have sons and not daughters.

Yesterday another mum (the lovely Actually Mummy) was asking twitter it's opinions on whether an 8 year old girl should be allowed to get rid of the hair on her legs. The reason being that this girl is being teased at school by both boys and girls for having hairy legs, and she had told her Mum this and wanted to know what she could do because it was making her unhappy .I for one added my two pennies worth, and I could see going through her timeline, that this Mum had started a very interesting debate which received a lot of tweets.

It made me think back to my own childhood/teenage years and the problems I faced with my Mum; trying to make her understand my own feelings when I myself was teased on several occasions regarding more than one issue that made me feel unhappy.

Body Hair
I matured very young and a lot sooner than many of my friends, and I had dark hair which resulted in hair legs and underarms from primary school onwards. It wasn't until I reached secondary school that I was teased for it, probably when I was about 12 or 13. It wasn't so bad during the winter months because I wore thick black tights, but as soon as the warmer months arrived, and indeed in my PE lessons throughout the school year, my hairiness was on show for all to see and I got a lot of stick for it, mostly from boys.

My mum must have been aware of my hair 'problem' because when I was 13 she actually let me get rid of the hair with an electric lady razor (a Phillips one from memory) during the school holidays. it was great and I thought this meant that she was going to let me continue , but she didn't allow me to do it again until I was 14 or 15 when I was given me of those razors for a birthday or Christmas present!

Bra
Again, as I mentioned before, I was well developed at a young age and by the age of 9 I had little 'lady bumps' on my chest, and I was aware of them because the boys at my primary school were always trying to get a look when we got changed for PE ( we had unisex changing rooms there, it was a small village school) which was soooooo embarrassing! I remember when I was about 11 over hearing my Nan telling my mum that maybe it was time I had a bra, but Mum said I was too young. Fast forward a couple more years, and I am at secondary school and I see girls with really flat chests wearing their 'trainer bras' and I am looking at mine and thinking my boobs are bigger than theirs! My best friend told me that I just needed to tell my Mum that I needed a bra , but the trouble was I got embarrassed by such things and would go bright red! Anyway, eventually when I was 14 I was allowed one!

School Shoes
When I started secondary school my Mum decided instead of me having a brand new pair of school shoes like my brother, I was to have a hand me down pair that she had as we shared the same size feet. O.M.G!! They were just the most disgusting pair of shoes ever! Honestly, they were. They were black lace ups with a pale brown coloured chunky heel - I remember seeing them on the female police officer in the opening or closing credits of The Bill back when it first started on TV. Basically, not the type of shoe a 12 year old girl would want to wear, especially when starting a new school! Well I got called so many names from sky scraper, 4x4 (I was tall anyway, the shoes did not help!) well you get the idea! It was humiliating!

About half way through the school year, Mum relented and bought me a pair of nicer shoes from Clarkes, on condition that I still wore my old 'cloghoppers' (my own name for them) on the walk to school and then changed into my new shoes at my school locker. Well, I would change shoes before I entered the school gates, but unfortunately one day I must have forgotten to pick my new shoes up because I lost them! I was devastated and cried and cried for ages because it meant having to go back to wearing those awful shoes again!

It's ok, you can put the violins away now!!

When I think back to these things, it makes me realise that none of them did anything for my self confidence and I didn't have any for a long, long, long time. I still don't really, but as you get older you learn to accept yourself more and there are no school children to tease you! My mum didn't realise, and indeed still doesn't realise, how I felt back then, how her decisions affected me. It's like she had no empathy with my situation. Mind you if I thought kids were mean back then, just imagine what taunting I would have got if all that applied to me as a child/teenager nowadays! I would be a social outcast!! I guess that's the thing, although I was teased, it didn't happen to me aged 8 I was at least at secondary school on the verge of becoming a teenager.

I think it is very sad that nowadays, children as young as 8 are made to feel self conscious about their appearance and in GG's case about an issue which is not her own doing, after all, it is perfectly natural and healthy and NORMAL to have hair on your legs ! Indeed it is more abnormal not to have body hair. If the decision is made by her Mum to have her let hair removed then I also find it sad that a girl so young feels pressured to do this to feel happier and to shut the name callers up.

BUT I really admire and respect Actually Mummy for addressing this issue head on and taking into account her daughters anxieties and feelings, and taking her seriously. I really wish my Mum had done the same for me. But then I never had the confidence to speak to my mum properly about such important subjects because I couldn't I guess. I just wasn't able to speak openly about it. That is sad also. It's not that my Mum and I had a terrible relationship, I just didn't have the guts to face up to how I really felt and discuss it with her.

Yet I can't help but think why can't children be children anymore? Why do they feel they have to adhere to what they think is the 'norm' and why do other children have to be so mean when they probably have their own hang ups too. It is just wrong that youngsters can't just enjoy being young. They shouldn't have to face such dilemmas at such a young age.

It also makes being a parent even more tough doesn't it.

The Gallery - Sun

The sun has got his hat on
Hip hip hip hooray
The sun has got his hat on
And we can go outside and play.

For now at least.

I always think it's best not to get too excited because our British summers usually only last a few weeks and actually end before Summer officially starts! You have to make the most of each day because you never know if tomorrow you will wake up to rain again!

Here are a selection of my favourite photos taken while the sun was shining so far this year.

Jubilee Celebration Cake

I really wanted to make a cake to mark the Jubilee and I have been racking my (baby!) brain for a couple of weeks to think up the perfect one. Then suddenly, last week it hit me: as the British flag is red, white and blue I wanted to re-create these colours in a cake. So I thought that a red velvet sponge, coated in white cream cheese frosting with a blue decoration for the topping would hopefully be an interpretation of the union jack colour ways. Being a celebration cake it contains three sponge layers.

So here it is, my Jubilee Celebration Cake.

You will need:

250g s/r flour sifted
1 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp cocoa powder (unsweetened)
1 small jar of baby beetroot, rinsed and puréed
1 tbsp red gel food liquid colouring
125g unsalted butter, at room temperature
225g sugar
2 eggs, at room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 individual pot (100ml approx) of vanilla yogurt
1 tsp white vinegar
1 tsp baking soda

Then you need to:

Preheat the oven to 180oC/160oC (fan)
Grease and line 3 x 8 inch cake tins

Beat the butter and sugar together until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, vanilla essence, flour, baking powder and cocoa powder and red food colouring gel and beat until combined. Then add the beetroot and yogurt and mix well again.

In a separate bowl, mix together the white wine vinegar and baking soda and watch it fizz! *please note that you need to ensure that your cake tins are ready as this next bit needs to be done quickly*

Add the fizzing baking soda mixture to the cake batter and give it a good stir as quickly as you can and then divide the batter between the three tins and then place in to the oven.

Bake in the oven for about 25 minutes or until the cakes are cooked

While the cake is cooking, make the cream cheese frosting

Cream cheese frosting

2 tubs of full fat cream cheese
125g unsealed butter, at room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
300g icing sugar, sifted

Beat the butter and cream cheese together until combined
Add the remaining ingredients and beat until creamy
Pour into a sealed container and refrigerate until required.

Once the cakes are cooked, allow to cool and then remove from their tins and leave them to cool completely.

When they have cooled down, sandwich the three sponges together with the cream cheese frosting

Then decorate the cake with the remainder of the frosting. Place in the fridge until you want to eat it so that the cream cheese frosting stays set. Just before serving decorate the top of the cake with anything you like really or you could just leave it plain. Being a Jubilee cake I used red, white and blue sugar coated balls and some blue edible glitter.

A great cake for any celebration really!

Meal Planning Monday #2

I stuck to my planner pretty well last week. I made only a couple of slight adjustments like no meatballs just a roasted vegetable pasta for one of the boys meals. Also we ended up having meals provided for us as a result of two family get togethers this weekend, so this means I can carry a couple of meals over into this week. This works out rather nicely as I am still trying to budget better, so I think this week will see me using meals up from the freezer and items from my food cupboard as much as possible.

With this in mind my meal planner this week is as follows:

Monday

Lunch :
cottage pie (leftover from Mums on Saturday!) for Jenson
: Burton is poorly so not sure what he will want
: ham pasta salad for OH and Me

Dinner:
Italian style bacon and tomato mash potato topped pie (leftovers from freezer)

Tuesday

OH out today

Lunch :
Homemade sausage meatballs & roasted vegetable pasta sauce (leftovers
of both in freezer) for B & J
Roasted veg pasta for me

Dinner:
Homemade sausage meatballs & roasted vegetable pasta sauce for OH
Jacket Potato & Beans for me

Wednesday

We will be having lunch at Granma's, and its her turn to cook this week.

Dinner:
chili con carne & rice for OH
ham salad for me

Thursday

Burton at Ladybirds/ OH out today

Lunch:
beans on toast for me
scrambled egg & beans on toast for Jenson

Dinner:
Slow Cooker roast chicken, salad and homemade potato wedges

Friday

Lunch:
Homemade pizza for all of us

Dinner:
Chicken, bacon & roasted pepper pasta bake & salad

Saturday

Lunch:
Spaghetti bolognese

Dinner :
we are out at a wedding anniversary 'do'

Sunday

Will leave open as not sure where we will be or what we are doing

So not terribly exciting BUT will make room in my freezer which is full again at the moment, and hopefully save a few pennies on food shopping this week.

That Was The Week That Was - Summer At Last!

Phew! What a scorcher this week has been! Mustn't complain of course after all the awful weather we have had recently, but I am pleased that it is cooler tonight!

Anyway, here is my week that was.

Monday
While Burton was at Ladybirds, the Olympic Torch passed through Barnstaple, but after much deliberation I decided not to go and watch it. I think if Burton had been around I would have done, but as it is it was very busy by all accounts so I may not have seen much with the buggy anyway.
So instead I did some baking and cooking and played with Jenson. When Burton got home, despite it saying in his diary book that he ate some of his two course lunch, he said he was hungry and proceeded to eat two sausage filled rolls and some fruit!
I found a height chart that I had forgotten we had, so when Daddy finished work we measured Burton and Jenson so we will now have a record of their height growth at last!

Tuesday
We awoke to blue skies and sunshine this morning, so we set off into town early as we just needed to pop into the market to buy some fruit and vegetables and had to go to the sorting office to collect a parcel. On the way home while Jenson napped in the buggy, we went to the park and Burton spent about half an hour being swung on the basket swing thingy

Granma picked Burton up after tea to stay the night at her house with Ben. He didn't need asking twice if he would like to stay!

Wednesday
Jenson and I made our way to Granma's this morning and although it was still warm, it was a bit overcast so the boys and I played outside on the swings and the trampoline.

This afternoon while Jenson slept, the sun came out so after applying sun cream and sun hats, Burton and Ben went outside with their water pistols and had lots of fun getting wet!

Thursday
This morning we went to the town I used to live and work in to meet up with some girls I went to school with as Lorraine was back from Canada for her yearly fortnight trip home with her daughter who is a little younger than Burton. I didn't see her last year as I had just given birth to Jenson! It's funny to hear Leah, her daughter, speak with a Canadian accent! It was nice to see her and my other friends and their children, and Burton and Leah played well together....most of the time!

When we got home it was lunchtime and due to it being so hot outside we spent the afternoon indoors in the cool. However, I promised Burton that we would go to the park for tea and that I would pack a picnic, and I did and I also managed to persuade Daddy to finish work a little early so that he cold join us. It was really lovely and not so hot by then either and we stayed for a couple of hours.

Friday
This morning we met Lisa and Joe at Funderzone (soft play) and we were the only people there due to the hot weather I expect! I have never know it to be so quiet ! It was great!
We left at 1.30pm as Jenson was almost falling asleep on me and he went for a nap when we got home. While he slept, Burton and I had a lazy hour and a half watching CBeebies. My friend Rita popped in on her way home from work to see the boys and Burton, in particular, enjoyed showing her how to play a Doodlebugs and the Shopping List game!
After the boys had gone to bed, I did some baking and made a chocolate sponge cake and a tea fruit loaf to take to my Mums tomorrow.

Saturday
We all went to my Mums today as my grandparents are staying. Burton helped grandad wash Shadow which he thought was great fun!

Due to it being sooo hot today, we didn't take Shadow for a walk until 4pm,and even then it was still scorchio! We found a stream and let the boys have a paddle , well I say paddle in Burton's case it was almost a swim and he got so wet! Unfortunately, I didn't take my phone with me so I have no photos of this!

Sunday
Burton woke Jenson and I up at 5.30am today! I am hoping this is a one off!
Today was Granma's birthday, so this morning we met at Funderzone so that all the grandchildren (of which there are seven) could play for a couple of hours. Afterwards it was back to Grandma's house for a BBQ which we ate indoors as it was warm but overcast and a little drizzly at times.
The cousins had a go at Twister after lunch, which was very funny to watch!

The rest of the day was spent playing out in the garden as it was dry and warm, although still overcast. Needless to say by 6pm Burton was flagging so we left and he fell asleep on the way home, in fact about a minutes after we drove away!

I hope he sleeps through later tomorrow morning!

Party Flashback

When I saw that the theme for this weeks Flashback Friday is Party I knew which photos I would use, as I have been waiting for an excuse to use them for some time now.

Back in November 2003, many of my school friends started turning 30 and as a result there were few 30th birthday parties between 1993/1994 that I attended. The one in November was for a pair twins, Darren and Wayne, and the theme was 1970's. Now back then I LOVED an excuse to dress up, get drunk, hang out with my friends and have a laugh.

My three best friends from school, Kimberly, Elaine and Beth, came to my house in the evening and we had a meal and some wine before getting ready for the party.

We had all visited the charity shops to make our 70's inspired outfits and we wore some garish eye make up and I also wore an Afro wig!

We all looked very funky and far out man!

It was a great party and we did all get very *tipsy* and we saw people that we hadn't seen since college or school. It was a brilliant night infact!!

The girls were having a sleepover at my house that night and we eventually rolled in at 1am ish and my ex was very understanding as he heard us all arrive home and got up and made us all a cup of tea! Of course we put some music on and we started playing our 'air guitars', like you do !!

I expect we also attempted to stay up and watch 'Dirty Dancing' because *that* is how we rocked and rolled!

Of course nowadays my idea of a party involves pass the parcel and making party food and a birthday cake! How times have changed!

Brio Duck Pull Along Wooden Baby Toy Review

I love wooden toys. Not for me of course, but for my children. I think they are quite beautiful actually, and look lovely too. They are the type of toys which I hope my boys will enjoy playing with for years to come and that they will survive long enough for maybe grandchildren to also have fun with.

Brio make wonderful wooden toys (we already have one of their train sets which was a Burton's Christmas present last year), and we were recently sent the Brio Duck Pull Along Wooden Baby Toy to have a play with.

Now as soon as I accepted this product, I knew that despite it being a 'baby' toy a certain toddler would be playing with it the most! And I was right! As soon as Burton saw the box with the photograph of the duck on it, he could not wait for me to open it and take it out for him to see it! He was then kept occupied with the duck for a good hour and had lots of fun taking it for a walk across the lounge floor!

When I was able to hold the toy in my own hands for a few moments, I loved the feel of it; smooth and weighty and a quality toy as I would expect from Brio. It is also a really cute duck to look at and very appealing to youngsters with its use of bold primary colours: from it's bright yellow beak and wings, white body and tail, and red neck and wheels. Another really lovely feature is that as the duck moves along the ground, head moves and it's wings flap! My two found these particular features very endearing.

Jenson, the actual baby, has found the duck very funny and rather tasty, when he has been able to play with the duck of course!

Not walking yet, Jenson hasn't used the duck as a pull along toy but has still laughed at it whenever Mummy or big brother has let it waddle past him.

Priced at just £11.99 and suitable for children aged 19 months and over, I think this gorgeous duck is excellent value for money, especially given that it is made from solid wood. Available to buy from the online nursery shop Hello Baby, which sells a wide range of baby toys, baby safety and travel products and nursery furniture, this superb wooden pull along duck would make a fantastic gift for the little people in your life.

And let's face it, no batteries required either!

I was sent a wooden duck for the purpose of this post. All comments and opinions about it are my own and honest.

Hidden Vegetable Recipes - Sauces & Soup

I make a lot of meals where I hide vegetables within the sauce, in order to make sure my boys (and that includes their daddy!) get the nutritional benefits they need without any "me not like that mummy" comments/ 'turned up nose' looks!

So I thought I would share some with you which work with my family, and you never know might help get yours to eat more veg too, if yours don't already of course!

Now I don't wish to tell anyone 'how to suck eggs' here, but one really quick and easy way to get them to eat an assortment of healthy veg is to simply roast some and then several different meals can be made.

For example:

Take
an assortment of vegetables eg. 1 butternut squash, 2 courgettes, 3 peppers, 2 onions, 8 large tomatoes
Prepare
them and chop them into medium same sized pieces
Add
a few cloves of garlic, some basil and a good glug of olive oil

Roast in the oven at 180oC (fan oven) for about 40 minutes

Obviously, if you and your family will eat them like this then great! However, as I mentioned earlier the name of the game in my house is 'hidden' vegetables!

Allow to cool slightly, then blend until a thick sauce is created (you may wish to add some black pepper). The colour of the sauce is great - really vibrant and it's just full of such goodness :)

This will make a great pasta sauce which you can leave as vegetarian and maybe add some cheese. Or you can add some meatballs or another meat (chicken, ham, bacon, sausage) to make a meaty pasta dish (you may wish to season this sauce with extra salt or a little sugar to balance the flavour of the sauce - do what you think taste best as each vegetable has a different flavour).

I have also used this as a pizza sauce in place of the more traditional tomato sauce you might usually use for the base.

To make this into a soup, simply add about 400ml (depending on how thick/thin you like your soup) of chicken or vegetable stock and blend again. Re- heat gently when ready to eat.

Simples!

I am sure many of you already do this yourselves so apologies for telling you things you already know. BUT if you haven't and you don't, then why not give it a go!

It works with my children!

Picture Postcard - The Gallery

To celebrate her virtual Gallery having it's 100th week, this weeks theme set by Tara is Picture Postcard and one lucky Gallery entrant will get the chance to have their photograph entry made into a greetings card!

I am submitting this photo. It was taken the day before I started going into labour with Burton: the last place I visited before I became a Mummy!

I was at Lynton and Lynmouth here in North Devon. The photo was taken while I was riding on the cliff railway which is a unique Victorian water powered lift which operates between the two villages.

Wish you were here?

Happy Centenary!

Chuppi Illuminated Art Toy

A few weeks ago we were sent a Chuppi by MATHMOS for Burton to trial. Described as being a "perfect nightlight for any design conscious home", the Chuppi is a fab ergonomic shaped product that has been created to automatically fade after half an hour which is hopefully how long it takes the average child to drop off to sleep!
Burton excitedly opened the box when it arrived and enthusiastically went "wow" when removed it from its box to show him. Bless him as he didn't really understand what it was at this point! However, once I showed him the stickers! Well then he was practically jumping up and down!
You see the great and fun thing about the Chuppi is that it comes with a couple of packs of stickers featuring eyes, mouths etc.. which allows for up to 18 different characters to be created by your little one.
Well as you an imagine, Burton was desperate to start sticking but first Mummy had to charge the Chuppi! Included with the nightlight is a re-charge stand which you plug in, and it takes a couple of hours to charge it up
Once charged the Chuppi can be set to show just one single colour or to reveal its spectrum of colours.
If your child does take longer than 30 minutes to drop off to sleep, then the Chuppi can stay alight for up to 6 hours. Burton really enjoyed taking his to bed with him and watching his own little light show under his duvet.
This night light in itself is suitable from birth onwards, as it doesnt get hot or even warm to the touch and is soothing to look at when preparing to go to sleep. However, if you are going to use the stickers then the Chuppi must only be given to a child aged 3 or above due to the size of the stickers. I would also add here that the stickers can be removed very easily, obviously, and did actually fall off in bed, so a smaller child could quite easily put a sticker in its mouth!!
Of course although the Chuppi does make an ideal bedtime companion for toddlers and young children, it could also make an ideal gift for an older person too as its is quite quirky and very contemporary illuminated art toy. Another interesting fact about this product is that British based designers, TADO from Sheffield, worked on its design with MATHMOS.
Priced at £30 the Chuppi is a lot of fun and has been keeping Burton company at bedtime and he has enjoyed making funny faces on it with his stickers. It does look very cute! We have enjoyed our time with it.

It is available to buy online from the MATHMOS website

GIVE AWAY
One lucky Mummy Mishaps reader can win a Chuppi, worth, £30, for themselves or their little one simply by filling in the rafflecopter form below.

Meal Planning Monday #1

I have been reading with some interest for some time now the Meal Planning Monday posts, and while I do try to plan my weeks meals I have never bothered to write a post myself and link up.

Well, I am going to from now on.......hopefully at least!

Basically, for several reasons.

1). It makes ordering my on line grocery shopping much easier if I actually know what meals I plan to cook!

2). I need to budget more as our grocery bills each months are too high.

3). I want to lose some weight and again it I know what meals I am having I won't slip up with my healthy earth plan!

4). By committing myself to posting my meal planner each Monday, I am hoping it will make me stick to it and keep it going.

Hmmmm we will see!

As a rule, Burton and Jenson tend to have their cooked meal at lunchtime which is often what OH and I had the night before or are going to have that night. Then the boys have a 'tea' at tea time which doesn't involve cooking eg. Sandwiches, finger food

So here is my meal planner for this week. I may move the meals around a bit but essentially this is what I will aim to cook for the next seven days.

Monday

Jacket Potato & Ham Salad (me)
Homemade Mini Savoury Muffins & Steamed Veg (J)
Pasta Salad (OH)

Dinner:
Homemade Baked Gnocchi With A Rich Tomato, Bacon & Pepper Sauce

Thursday

Tuna Jacket Potato & Salad (me)

Friday

Lunch :
Slow Cooker Beef Bourguignon, Mash Potato, Carrots & Peas (B, J & Me)
(not made this before but will make a change from steak & ale which I
always ways make! If it turns out well, I will post recipe)
Pesto Pasta (OH)

Dinner :
Leftover Beef Bourguignon, Mash Potato, Carrots & Peas (OH)
Beans On Toast (me)

Saturday

Lunch :
Not sure where we will be/what we will be doing, but I have homemade meals in the freezer for the
boys/all of us eg. Bolognese sauce for pasta

Dinner :
Homemade Chilli Con Carne & Rice OR Stuffed Jacket Potato & Salad

Sunday

It is Granma's birthday and we will be doing something for that eg. BBQ or a buffet

Dinner:
not sure, it will depend what we eat for lunch!

And that is that!
**Please note: although it looks like we don't eat many vegetables, we do but they are hidden in my meals as I have 3 fussy vegetable eaters!!
eg.Barn Pie will contain carrot, courgette, onion, baked beans and apple, with potato on top!
eg. the tomato sauce for the gnocchi contains grated carrot, peppers, spinach, courgette & onions & tomatoes!
I have to get their vegetables into them somehow!
